Sexual harassment

May 01, 2019 00:00:00

We regularly learn horrific tales of sexual harassment. Women, and even children, are becoming victims at educational institutions, workplaces, buses, and even at their own homes.

The story of Nusrat Jahan Rafi who was sexually harassed by the principal of her madrasa is known to all. She lost her life as she was set on fire. Her fault was she protested her principal's wrongdoing.

Our government has played an important role in ensuring empowerment of women. Despite this, safety for women still remains a far cry. Trials for rape, eve-teasing and sexual harassment are not completed speedily. The main culprits get bail or remain unpunished due to their affiliation with influential people of society.

Let us not forget about Tanu who succumbed to death after rape. The mystery is yet to be disclosed even after three years.

I would urge people to be vocal against sexual harassment. There is no scope to show mercy to sexual predators. Our existing procedure of judicial system of sexual harassment must be completed within shortest possible time, otherwise such notorious acts will continue unabated.
