Rumi, the great Persian poet said, silence is golden. But silence is sadly missing from our day-to-day life. Whether we want it or not we are perturbed by unknown and immeasurable volume of cacophonies in our life that makes forget that golden saying of the Persian poet. As soon as we step out of our house, we are tormented by blaring noises of vehicular traffic. We are hardly better off staying at home. Neighbours often arrange social gatherings with loud live music played till late at night.
One of my friends who went abroad a few months back told me that to his utter surprise, he found no honking and the traffic was moving in a quiet and disciplined manner. Sometimes I have a feeling that perhaps as a nation we don't like silence, which is why we see many of our political leaders blabbering for no reason and arousing controversies and thus creating nothing but sound pollution. I think, our government should declare a national silence day when no one will talk and observe complete silence. This will help us live in peace for a day in a year. We should remember what Lau Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher and poet said about silence. He said "silence is the source of great strength".
