Silent suffering of urban life
February 19, 2026 00:00:00
Autorickshaws have long been a source of frustration for commuters in Dhaka. Although they are a cost-effective and convenient mode of transportation for short distances, their unregulated movement and lack of proper enforcement of rules have significantly worsened the city's traffic situation.
One of the most pressing problems caused by autorickshaws is traffic congestion. Many of these vehicles stop abruptly on busy roads to pick up and drop off passengers, often without regard for traffic regulations. They frequently ignore lane discipline and traffic signals, creating disorder and forcing pedestrians as well as other drivers to endure unnecessary hardship.
The unrestricted movement of autorickshaws has also contributed to a rise in road accidents. Violations of traffic laws, the increasing number of illegal autorickshaws, and the absence of effective monitoring have made the capital's roads increasingly unsafe. As a result, not only traffic congestion but also accidents and environmental pollution are on the rise.
Furthermore, the lack of coordination and consensus between the authorities and autorickshaw drivers regarding regulations and policies has further complicated the situation. It is therefore imperative to formulate clear and permanent policies, strictly enforce traffic laws, make digital meters mandatory, and ensure proper training for drivers. Such measures would help ensure passenger safety, improve traffic flow and enhance the overall quality of urban life.
