Slashed bandwidth: Subscribers suffer

July 12, 2019 00:00:00

The news came as a surprise to many that two of the leading mobile operators like Grameenphone and Robi are being accused of dodging their dues. It has surfaced in the audit reports that Grameenphone and Robi owe the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) more than Tk 125.8 billion and Tk 8.67 billion respectively.

The BTRC had asked the two companies to pay the dues immediately to government coffers. As they did not do it within the given time, the BTRC instructed the International Internet Gateways to reduce the bandwidth for both companies.

As the IIGs did as they were told, subscribers of both companies are badly affected now. They are not getting proper internet speed. Also, there are higher rates of call drops.

Neither the regulatory authority nor the telecom companies should hold the subscribers hostage. The earlier the parties resolve the issue, the better it will be for the subscribers.
