Smoking among women in the developed world is decreasing while it is increasing in the developing countries. The number of smokers among ladies in Dhaka is rising and we need to be alert against it. Even in the heart of the capital, we see young girls buying cigarettes from vendors and smoking openly.
Once I asked a cigarette-seller about women smokers and he said their number is quite high. According to him, the number is increasing. According to doctors, smoking tobacco does more harm to a woman than a man.
As per report of the World Health Organisation, tobacco is a major cause for premature death. Although compared to other countries of the world the number of woman smokers is fairly low in our country. But there is no reason to be indifferent about it.
Anti-smoking campaign in our country should be further strengthened to raise awareness among young girls about ill-effects of smoking on health. I hope, the government and the media will continue to play their roles in intensifying campaign against tobacco. Let us say 'no' to tobacco and 'yes' to life.
