NAIROBI, Jun 9 (AFP): Somali founding president Aden Abdulle Osman Friday died in a Kenyan hospital after a long illness, marking the end of a man who quietly retired after he was ousted, officials said. He was 99.
Osman, who served as president for seven years after the country got independence from Italy in 1960, died in Nairobi hospital, said his friend Oddey Mohamed. "Our president Osman passed away in Nairobi Hospital today after he has admitted for more than two weeks," he told AFP. Osman died on a life support machine, but it was not clear from what illness he suffered.
Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed Omar Habeb confirmed the death and said the transitional government was organising a state burial for the ex-president.
