KHIAM, Lebanon, June 25 (AFP): Spanish Defence Minister Jose Antonio Alonso arrived in Lebanon Monday to visit his country's troops the day after a bomb attack killed six UN peacekeepers, an AFP correspondent said.
Alonso was visiting the headquarters of the Spanish contingent with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon after Sunday's bomb blast which killed three Spaniards and three Colombian nationals.
It was the first fatal attack on UN peacekeepers since UNIFIL's mandate was expanded last year in the wake of a devastating 34-day war between Israeli troops and the Hezbollah Shiite militia in southern Lebanon.
On Sunday, Alonso told a televised news conference that his country "supports and will continue to support the United Nations UNIFIL mission."
