State of road discipline
September 06, 2020 00:00:00
Incidents of road crashes often captured headlines until the outbreak of the coronavirus. The entire transport sector faced a different crisis, like other sectors did, once shutdown was imposed. However, when economic activities have resumed, health rules are allegedly not followed in public transport and some operators charged higher than officially fixed fares. The minister concerned also admitted this reality.
This is frustrating to see that discipline on roads and highways cannot be established even after a huge demonstration and repeated pledges to make improvement. A high-powered taskforce was also formed. The taskforce took a series of steps for bringing discipline in the transport sector. We fear lest our good initiatives are lost due to lack of willingness to enforce laws and rules and take follow-up steps.
