Stop abusing children in classrooms

September 12, 2022 00:00:00

Although it is illegal, corporal punishment is still being practised in the classrooms of our educational institutions. Just a few months ago, a schoolgirl in Sirajganj was beaten so hard that she had her hand fractured. Besides physical punishment, teachers also shame students in front of the class. This public humiliation often prompts many to take their own lives. Beating students in the classrooms is illegal in Bangladesh. However, many parents often report that there has been no change in the teachers' attitude. And they continue to beat students, as if they were above the law.

Teachers have the power to influence mindsets and make or break personalities of their students. So, it is increasingly important for school managements to monitor their teachers and bring them under the law. Such teachers will only bring disgrace to this noble profession. At the same time, students should be encouraged to speak to the management directly or a specific individual like a student's counsellor about these incidents.
