Animals are subjected to cruelty in several ways in Bangladesh. And for this, there is no justification. How can we justify the killing of animals just for fun? City corporation authorities often launch dog-culling drives and scores of stray dogs are poisoned to death. Preserving the environment and forests remains an uphill battle for wildlife enthusiasts as well as conservationists. Wild animals are regularly poached for their skin, teeth, bones, etc. A large number of elephants are killed for ivory. And snakes, tigers and crocodiles are killed for their skin. Rare species like Indian Civets are also caught for making herbal medicines. The use of Diclofenac, a banned veterinary drug, has even made vultures almost extinct in the country.
The plight of domestic animals is no better. Most animals kept in zoos are ill-fed and over-strained. Some animals are forced to provide entertainment for people. Animals are man's friend. They play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance. It is our duty to protect them from extinction and to treat them humanely. Doing so is also necessary for protection of the environment. We should stop our cruelty towards animals.
