At the 11th Executive Committee of the National Economic Council on October 23, 2018, the 'Land Acquisition and Utility Transfer Project: Support for the Improvement of Dhaka (Kachpur)-Sylhet-Tamabil Highway into four-lane and construction of separate service lanes in both sides' was approved. The 38.86 billion-worth project was approved by the ECNEC with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
It is reported by BSS that under this project, land will be acquired on both sides of the nearly 270.60 kilometre highway. Simultaneously, necessary utilities will be transferred to gradually upgrade this highway into four-lane, in a bid to expand the regional road network.
The project has been approved to expedite the extension process of the Asian Highway Network (AHN) and the regional road networks including BIMSTEC corridor and SAARC corridor.
Economists hold the view that better roads and communication system that connect with the AHN will foster trade and commerce at home as well as regionally.
Bangladesh can gain a lot from the AHN. I believe that the government should consider more projects that will improve these roads and highways. If the road communication is improved drastically, Bangladesh will also enjoy a spike in the number of tourists from other countries linked with the AHN.
