Owing to declining ground water level in Dhaka, the Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has set up a modern water treatment plant (WTP) at Saidabad to treat surface water from Shitalakhya River. The water of the plant is supplied to Dhaka city through pipelines. But the treated water of the plant is not suitable for drinking specially in lean season of the year (from December to June). Different untreated wastes of industries on both sides of the river are drained into the river as most industries do not bother to treat their wastes.
The water supplied by the WASA through its pipelines is not drinkable and not even suitable for cooking purposes. The Department of Environment can play a vital role here to co-operate with the WASA in stopping the flow of these industrial wastes into the river Shitalakhya. It should take a special drive to impose financial penalty on the industrial units so that they refrain from draining waste materials in the river without necessary treatment. Otherwise, Saidabad WTP of Dhaka WASA will fail to treat water at satisfactory level and the city-dwellers will not get drinkable water.
