Tackling unemployment--

January 16, 2025 00:00:00

A significant number of educated youth remain frustrated due to a lack of suitable jobs. The mismatch between the skills acquired through education and the demands of the labour market has worsened this problem, highlighting the urgent need for innovation in job creation.

A skill-based education system is crucial. Many students graduate with degrees but lack the practical skills required by employers. A greater focus on vocational training and technical education will better equip young people for employment and align their abilities with market needs. Educational institutions should collaborate with industries to design curriculum and training programmes tailored to current job market demands.

Promoting entrepreneurship is another vital step. The government should provide easier access to loans and training to encourage innovative business ideas. A dedicated startup policy could foster new entrepreneurs, generating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth. Additionally, creating incubation centres in universities and major cities can support budding entrepreneurs with resources and mentorship.

A centralised platform for connecting job seekers with employers based on specific skills could improve job matching. Coordinated employment policies between the public and private sectors would also open new pathways for meaningful employment. Partnerships between private companies and educational institutions can lead to internships, apprenticeships, and guaranteed job placements for skilled graduates.

In the digital age, enhancing technological proficiency and digital skills is essential. Young people trained in digital skills can access global opportunities through freelancing and online jobs, contributing to national development. Expanding internet access to rural areas and offering free or subsidised digital training programmes can empower underserved communities to participate in the digital economy.
