Taking precautionary measures against lightning
May 25, 2023 00:00:00
Deaths from lightning strikes are quite common in Bangladesh. But in recent years, the rate of such deaths has been rising alarmingly. This is why the government declared it a natural disaster in 2016. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, lightning strikes kill 250 people on an average every year in the country. Thunderbolts also kill or injure a large number of livestock. A total of nine people reportedly died in lightning strikes across the country just in one day on Tuesday last.
Farmers, fishermen and others who have to work in open spaces usually become victims of lightning strikes. According to experts, worldwide temperatures are increasing, which is one of the main reasons for increased incidents of lightning in Bangladesh. To avoid casualties from lightning, the government has recently asked people to take a number of precautions that include staying at home during thunderstorms, wearing rubber shoes if needed, and avoiding places with tall trees, electric poles and mobile phone towers, among others. We should start campaigning about what people should do if there is a thunderstorm so that everyone can stay safe from this disaster.
