THE HAGUE, June 25 (AFP): The war crimes trial of Charles Taylor resumed Monday in The Hague in the absence of the former Liberian president charged in connection with rebel atrocities in neighbouring Sierra Leone.
Taylor, 59, has been seeking another defence team, according to documents filed last week with the UN-backed Special Court for Sierre Leone, after he sacked his lawyer when his trial got underway three weeks ago.
Taylor -- the first African head of state ever to stand trial for war crimes -- faces 11 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the 1991-2001 civil war in Sierra Leone.
Up to 200,000 people were killed in that conflict, with rebels mutilating thousands more, cutting off arms, legs, ears or noses.
