Teenage gangs and drug menace

At an age when they are supposed to be in school and college with books and notebooks, a section of teenagers are roaming the world of crime. They are involved in all kinds of misdeeds such as riots, murders, extortion and drug dealing. Instead of classrooms, their presence is felt in dark alleys and street corners where they have established a reign of terror in society. The innocent dreams of youth are being replaced by the grim realities of the underworld.
In recent years, these groups-often called "teenage gangs"-have evolved from informal gatherings into organised criminal networks. Drugs play a central role in this transformation, acting as both a lure and a driving force. Even students are being drawn into this cycle, tempted by easy money and a false sense of power.
Addiction often pushes these youths towards crime. When personal funds fall short, they resort to extortion, robbery and other illegal activities. Many gangs now possess not only sharp weapons but also illegal firearms, posing a serious threat to public safety. Their operations are often sustained by the backing of influential local figures who use them for political or personal gain, creating a dangerous sense of impunity.
Social media has further intensified this culture. Gangs flaunt weapons and aggressive behaviour online to assert dominance, which frequently escalates into real-life violence. Minor disputes can quickly turn deadly, leaving communities gripped by fear.
Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach. Families must remain engaged, schools should emphasise moral education and the authorities must curb drug supply and dismantle criminal patronage networks. Without urgent action, this growing menace will endanger the future of the nation.
