Teesta River dying
April 13, 2014 00:00:00
In a local newspaper, we saw alarming pictures of declining water level in the Teesta River. Once a mighty river, it has now turned into a meek canal. It is due to the unilateral water withdrawal in the upstream by India.
The Teesta is at present dying. India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers. Despite the existence of a Joint Rivers' Commission between the countries, many problems are still festering. The problem can be solved if India shows sincerity in this regard.
Mere lip service will not bring anything positive. Concrete steps should be taken to mitigate the problem of the people residing near the Teesta. We can solve the problem with mutual understanding and good neighbourly attitude.
