Recently, with a record voter turnout the month-long Indian Lok Sabha election has come to an end successfully. Official election results will be announced on May 16. If we compare the role of our Election Commission (EC) ahead of and during the election with the Indian Election Commission, we will feel very disappointed.
The way the Indian EC played its role to hold the Lok Sabha election was exemplary for us. We need a strong EC like that one which will ensure the voting rights of the common people. The Bangladesh EC was too meek and subservient to play its role compared to that of our big neighbour. If we compare the magnitude of Indian election with ours, we will find it a small affair. Despite this, our EC failed to play its due role and disappointed the Bangladeshi people jeopardising our democracy.
Without a strong EC, we cannot think of making our democracy stronger. We must not forget we have established democracy after a long struggle against the autocratic rulers and should not divert our caravan of democracy as it may prove too costly for us. We hope the conscious people of our country will put pressure on the government so that it let our EC to be independent and powerful.
