The silent crisis of mental health

June 05, 2026 00:00:00

Bangladesh is a nation known for its resilience and vibrant spirit. Yet beneath the bustle of daily life lies a growing crisis that often goes unnoticed: mental health. While physical illnesses are readily acknowledged and treated, psychological suffering is frequently ignored, dismissed or hidden due to stigma and social pressure.

One of the biggest obstacles to addressing mental health is the widespread misconception that emotional distress is a sign of weakness or instability. People struggling with depression anxiety, or trauma are often told to "be grateful" or "stay strong" rather than seek professional help. Fear of being labelled "pagol" (mad) forces many to suffer in silence, while families conceal mental health problems to protect their social reputation.

The burden is particularly heavy on young people. From an early age, students face intense pressure to achieve academic success, gain admission to prestigious universities, and secure stable employment. The relentless pursuit of grades and career success often comes at the expense of emotional well-being. Many young people silently battle stress, anxiety, and depression, while rising suicide rates highlight the devastating consequences of neglecting mental health.

Mental health challenges affect people across all segments of society. Women often endure emotional exhaustion while managing family responsibilities, while men are conditioned to suppress their feelings and bear financial and social pressures without complaint. Such expectations create immense psychological strain.

The crisis is further compounded by a shortage of trained mental health professionals and limited access to affordable care, particularly outside major cities. As a result, many people have nowhere to turn for support.

Mental health deserves the same attention as physical health. Breaking the stigma, encouraging open conversations and expanding access to mental health services are essential steps towards a healthier society. A compassionate Bangladesh must ensure that no one has to suffer alone in silence.
