Third language or quality education?

March 04, 2026 00:00:00

The proposal to introduce a compulsory third language in schools has sparked considerable debate among educators, parents, and policymakers. While learning multiple languages can broaden students' horizons and enhance future career opportunities, many believe that the immediate priority should be improving the overall quality of education. A significant number of students still struggle with basic proficiency in Bangla and English, which raises concerns about placing additional academic pressure on them.

Quality education depends on well-trained teachers, modern and effective teaching methods, adequate classroom facilities, and strong foundational learning. Without ensuring these essential elements, introducing a third language may become more of a burden than a benefit. Many parents and education experts argue that strengthening students' core skills and improving classroom instruction would better address existing learning gaps.

Learning an additional language can certainly be valuable, but only after establishing a solid educational foundation. Public opinion suggests that improving education quality should come first, while curriculum expansion can follow gradually and thoughtfully.
