Thousands of flights delayed due to computer failure in US

WASHINGTON, Jun 9 (Xinhua): Thousands of flights were delayed and some were canceled Friday across the United States, particularly on the east coast, due to a computer failure at the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
FAA spokeswoman Diane Spitaliere said a computer system in Atlanta, Georgia, that processes pilots' flights plans and sends them to air-traffic controllers failed early Friday, and the FAA then rerouted the function to another computer in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She said that due to a sharp increased volume of data, the computer in Salt Lake City was overloaded, making the problem worse.
