Torture of students continues

October 16, 2023 00:00:00

Another student was tortured by a few activists associated with the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). It happened at a dormitory of the Barishal University on Thursday night. The victim's left hand was fractured following the beating with a pipe he received. He was later admitted to a hospital. His offence was that he protested the ragging of junior students. The university authority has yet to take any action against the criminals. The proctor asked the victim to submit a written complaint.

Sadly, torturing students has become a regular thing. Halls and dormitories of universities are at times turned into torture cells. Over the years, many students have been victimised for no reason. The authorities do little to prevent the abuse. A section of BCL activists and associates terrorises campuses. Ragging, bullying and torturing are their tools to demonstrate dominance. Unfortunately, there is no effective move to stop the ragging and torturing. As a result, the number of such incidence is on the rise. Not all are reported due to fear of further torture. This does not help provide a healthy environment for learning. Strict measures are necessary to stop the bullies.
