Tragedy in brick kiln in Cumilla

January 27, 2019 00:00:00

At least 13 brick kiln workers were killed after a coal-laden truck skidded off the road and ploughed through a makeshift shed where the workers were staying. The incident occurred in Narayanpur village under Gholpasha union at Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla district in the early morning of January 25, 2019.

This was a tragic incident. Most of the deceased were teenagers. They were all day-labourers at the brick-field. It's painful that they died in their sleep. This latest road accident comes two days after an accident in Lakshmipur killed seven people, including six of a family, when a truck hit their CNG-run auto-rickshaw. The number of such incidents seems to be increasing and this is really unfortunate and unacceptable.

Most of these road accidents are not properly investigated. The culprits are not traced out, arrested and tried. If proper actions were taken, then maybe the number of road accidents would have been less in the country.

In case of these recent incidents, condolence is not enough for the families of the deceased. Proper compensation from the guilty parties should be ensured after proper investigation by the law enforcement agencies and government authorities. Drivers of all kinds of vehicles, pedestrians, commuters and other stakeholders should be more careful when moving on the roads and highways.
