Deaths under the wheels of killer buses and trucks are taking place one after another in various parts of the country. Over the past few days, accidents have taken place in Dhaka, Habiganj, Barishal, Gazipur, Munshiganj and other districts.
It has been evident from the recent accidents that there is a lack of governance in the transport sector.
Many causes are associated with the tragic roads mishaps. Some of the main reasons are: lack of expert and educated drivers, speeding and tendency to overtake, use of mobile phones and gadgets while driving and crossing the roads, jaywalking, plying of unlicensed and unfit vehicles on the roads, encroachment of footpaths by hawkers, goons and homeless people and indulgence of corruption by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) officials, while providing driving licenses and licenses of unfit vehicles.
Road mishaps can be curtailed by addressing these issues properly.
