NARATHIWAT, Thailand, June 24 (AFP): Two soldiers were killed and their bodies burnt beyond recognition Sunday in an attack by separatist insurgents in Thailand's strife-torn Muslim south, local police said.
The men were patrolling by motorcycle in Narathiwat province when a group of militants opened fire on them, police in the region said. The insurgents then stole the soldiers' weapons and set the bodies on fire, they said.
Separatist violence in Thailand's far south erupted in January 2004, and more 2,300 people have been killed in almost daily violence.
Killings are also becoming more gruesome, with insurgents occasionally beheading their victims or burning their bodies.
