UK EC's efforts to save democracy

June 27, 2018 00:00:00

The Guardian published a report on June 26, 2018 titled 'UK democracy under threat and reform is urgent, says electoral regulator'. It was mentioned that the electoral commission (EC) of the United Kingdom urged government authorities including parliament to change electoral laws.

Following the Cambridge Analytica investigation, the EC urged the authorities to fight misinformation and misuse of personal data alongside interference of overseas forces in elections. "Urgent action must be taken by the UK's governments to ensure that the tools used to regulate political campaigning online continue to be fit for purpose in a digital age," said the chair of the Electorial Commission. The electoral commission's move is also fuelled by the allegations of Russian interference during the US national elections in 2016. A special counsel investigation into the allegations is still going on in the USA. Bangladesh has made significant progress in the digital arena. Maybe, our election commission can consider the steps being taken by these countries.
