It is indeed sad that despite gross anomalies in the income source of the government employees, we don't see any effective step taken against them by the government. The corrupt government officials are hardly seen facing any stringent punishment and it encourages them to amass vast wealth through corruption harming our growing economy severely. Recently, the attorney general has suggested to investigate into the source of wealth of the customs officials as this department is notorious for large-scale corruption.
We don't need to learn rocket science to find out corruption because it is all pervasive in our society. The corrupt people openly ask for, bargain and take bribes even for their routine work. Bangladesh regularly secures one of the top positions in the corruption index disappointing the common people. We have been languishing in poverty, illiteracy and backwardness even after 42 years of our independence.
We must not forget that poverty is a curse and it is man-made in our country. Our country is not so poor in any sense but it is corruption which keeps it in the league of poor countries. The fruit of independence cannot reach the every section of the population without economic freedom. It is time to root out corruption in order to establish a beautiful and prosperous country we have been dreaming of since long.
