Unresolved Sagar-Runi murder

More than a decade has passed since the murder of journalist-couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi happened. Still, there is no headway in resolving the case filed over the murders. Instead, the deadline for submitting the probe report was deferred again. A Dhaka court on Sunday extended till November 16 the deadline for submitting the report. Thus, the probe report submission deadline was extended for the 104th time. It is a matter of disappointment. Without submission of the probe report, it is not possible to start the legal action.

Sagar was a news editor at the private TV channel Maasranga. His wife Runi was a senior reporter at ATN Bangla. They were killed on February 11, 2012, at their rented house in Dhaka. Their only son Mahir Sarowar Megh, then 5, was home at the time. The terrific murder sparked protests among the journalist community in the country. The government, however, ensured an impartial probe to unearth the killers. A promise was also made that the killers once identified would be punished. RAB was appointed to probe the case. After 11 years, the incompletion of the probe procedure fades the hope of justice.
