Unrest at a highly critical time

May 31, 2025 00:00:00

Bangladesh is currently passing a highly sensitive and critical phase. Instability in the economy, politics, and society has given rise to widespread uncertainty. Amidst ongoing reforms under the Yunus government, frequent protests-ranging from human chains to road blockades over relatively minor issues-are contributing to national instability.

Many of these demonstrations stem from individual grievances or narrow demands, often fuelled by political motives. Such actions disrupt public life, create traffic congestion, and risk undermining investor confidence, posing a serious threat to the country's economic momentum.

To move forward, a cooperative and constructive relationship between the government and the public is essential. The authorities must remain open to public concerns and develop robust mechanisms for dialogue and grievance resolution. At the same time, political parties must pursue respectful and responsible engagement, avoiding tactics that jeopardise national harmony.

While peaceful protest is a constitutional right, it should be exercised with a sense of responsibility and awareness of the national context. At a time when unity and collective effort are vital for progress, unnecessary unrest may diminish the spirit of the July uprising and erode national cohesion. All political stakeholders and citizens must act with maturity, placing the national interest above all else to materialise the dream of July uprising.
