Unsafe liquid foods
January 19, 2018 00:00:00
MANY liquid food items mostly bottled ones available in the market are far from being safe in terms of purity. It had been found in many research studies that so-called purified water in bottles or jars sold in open markets during the periods of study were neither safe nor pure. Doctors are of the opinion that most of the liquid drinks available in the market do not conform to health standards and are also unhygienic. In addition, huge quantities of items with expired dates are found available in the shops and markets. Although mobile courts conduct occasional drives against traders, they cannot have an enduring effect due to lack of follow-up actions. The government should monitor such activities in the market closely and proper follow-up initiatives should be carried out by the BSTI. Consumers are helpless and buy some of these items under compulsion knowing full well that the items contain germs and impurities. In developed countries, governments do not compromise on the issue and further probes are conducted to bring the offenders to justice. We urge upon the government to be uncompromising on the issue and treat all adulteration-related crimes with strong hands.
