A few days back I was skimming through newspapers. Suddenly a news item caught my eyes. It was about the birongonas (war heroines). Tears rolled down my eyes. Birongonas still go through harrowing experience. They still suffer from social stigma and lead inhuman life which is a shame for us as a nation. They have been alienated by the society and instead of looking at them with honour, we treat them differently. Most of them are at the fag end of their lives and want to live the rest of their lives with honour and dignity. The news item carried their appeal to the government for increasing government benefits provided to them for they are too insufficient to provide two square meals. I think it is not merely a demand from the war heroines, it is rather a matter of right for them and they fully deserve it. They have given us a lot and we owe them a lot.
I would request the authorities to please take the matter up and do the best that they can to help the war heroines.
