WASHINGTON, Jun 7 (AFP): The US House of Representatives Wednesday overwhelming passed a bill granting 6.4 billion dollars in development, economic and security aid to Afghanistan.
The Afghanistan Freedom and Security Support Act, passed by 406 votes to 10, also calls for the appointment of a US government coordinator to work to counter the country's burgeoning narcotics trade.
The bill provides 6.4 billion dollars for fiscal years 2008 through 2010. Just over two billion dollars of that will be available in 2008.
"The United States will not let Afghanistan fail," said Tom Lantos, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
