The members of my family gathered in front of our television on January 15, 2017 at round 11am in order to participate in the 'Akheri Munajat' of World Ijtema phase one but electricity went off. Although power supply resumed after sometime, we were deprived of the Ijtema Munajat. Millions could watch on TV that our President and Prime Minister participated in the prayer at their respective offices.
Again we assembled in front of TV on January 22, 2017 at the same time, but suddenly voltage went low in the area as was indicated by freeze, fan etc. and we were deprived to participate in Ijtema Munajat this time also. Electricity disruption is common in this locality and it is time for the authorities to take appropriate measures to redress the problem and reduce our overdependence on instant power services (IPS) which is just not desirable. I believe we are close to reaching a middle income country status soon.
Water supply by WASA in our New Eskaton area is also far from being satisfactory so much so that most of the small households under WASA supply network are using suction pumps to draw water that involves extra cost of electricity. Surface drains of New Eskaton main road and artery roads are full of liquid waste although rainy season is yet to come. It is better not to write about the state of affairs of footpaths, manholes, garbage disposals system etc. and it is difficult to claim ourselves a civilized nation. Dhaka is called the dirtiest city in the world after Damascus, the capital of war torn Syria.
Traffic jam is another problem news of which is frequently carried by our media --both print and electronic. We are supposedly in a digital age, but most of the digitally managed traffic signals are not in operation. The law enforcing agencies control traffic manually. Dhaka is likely to have multi-storied car parks at different locations of the city, there is none to be honest. Only a few multi-storied apartment buildings have underground car parks and those are also reserved for the inmates of the buildings only. There are no parking lots for markets as a result of which, cars are parked in a haphazard manner causing troubles for others. The way the number of vehicles, both public and private, is increasing, it is imperative that there should be multi-storied parking lots so that increased number of vehicles can be accommodated.
Coming back to problems of water and power supply, these are the two basic needs of any urban population. Efforts should be made to bring the problems under control if not eliminate the same totally.
As a humble citizen, I shall hope that the authorities will take appropriate care in respect of electric supply and water supply in the capital.
