Victims of road accidents in Bangladesh are left to die unless some miracle happens. The offender usually drives away hiding his identity. The injured victims are left with massive physical disability and pain without any immediate medical help. The offender, insurance companies and even the government shrug off their responsibility to the victims. In Bangladesh, there is no structural mechanism to reach the victims of road accident immediately to provide medical help. Death of the lone bread earner may turn all the members of the family financially orphan.
In western countries, insurance for vehicles is compulsory for third-party liability. When a road accident occurs, government agencies reach the spot along with law enforcers and paramedics. They take details of the accident, including the insurance company and the victim. They also call for ambulance to send the victim to hospital.
In England, citizens dial national emergency grid at number 999 which directs the local police station for quick action. In the UK there is the Motor Insurer Bureau which gives financial help to the victims of car accidents when there is no trace of the offending driver. They also have arbitrator to settle small claims.
Bangladesh government can introduce a 24-hour emergency number 999 so that people, especially the victims of road accident, can call for help as there are over four million engine-driven vehicles in Bangladesh. Police and ambulance should turn up at the place of accident. An extra amount of Tk 200 added to the insurance premium for four million motorists will generate huge money to run emergency services. This will save lives.
