Villain is within to cause gravest harm

The arrest of an assistant director of the University Grants Commission (UGC) along with two others for alleged leakage of question papers of various written tests points out the bad blood within. This is a sequel to the earlier arrest of a gang of four including its ringleader Jasimuddin Bhuyian with the illegal sale proceed amounting to Tk12.20 million from question papers of medical test on September 15. In fact, the Friday's arrest was made possible on the information of those arrested three days ago.

This is a time when protectors have become predators. No wonder the criminals have used the sanctuary of the controlling authority of the universities as a den of this outrageous crime. And as it is evident they have been doing this for a long time. The lure of lucre is so overwhelming that men in privileged positions mortgage their soul sometimes willingly and at other times unaware.

It is understandable that unless the culprits within connive with outsiders, leakage of question papers of important tests and examinations is not possible. The arrest of the UGC official has proved that integrity is sacrificed at the altar of avarice. The recovery of Tk 12.20 million in connection with the arrest of the gang of four gives an indication of the enormous amount of money that change hands for the undue favour done to the candidates. There is no reason to think that the gang has only seven members and the total amount they received from medical candidates is only Tk 12.20 million.

The rate for medical candidates was Tk 1.5 million each, for candidates of the judicial services Tk 1.0 million and for officers of Krishi Bank, Tk .60 million. If a gang can use the UGC building as a hub of question leakage for medical and other candidates with the aid of sophisticated devices, it should have possessed sacks of illegal money by now. It depends on how long it had been conducting its clandestine operation. Each candidate the gang promised to help was given a small device fitted to his or her ears and the answers were supplied from a central device. Imported from China, that device was set up in the UGC by its assistant director now in custody.

Clearly, crime has assumed sophistication thanks to advanced technology but so far as the quality of human being is concerned, there is much to be dreaded. If institutions are desecrated by people in whom the nation reposes trust, things fall apart. And this exactly is happening in this country. People are degrading themselves all around as if they are in a competition how fast they can accomplish the task.

This should be a reminder of the extinction of civilisation. Materialism getting the better of human integrity and conscience is bound to cause destruction of civilisation. The country has been making progress in terms of wealth creation but not all avenues of doing so can be said to have been done in a fair way. Such accomplishments at the cost of moral considerations are likely to prove rather a retrogressive step in the ultimate analysis. The nation has been too lax to take on the corrupt and the culprit. They must be dealt with mercilessly because they have carried out an assault on the very basics of the nation -the sense of righteousness and honesty.
