Torrential rain over the past few days caused severe water-logging in different parts of the country. However, the situation in the port city of Chittagong was the worst. Rain paralysed normal life there. Goods-laden trucks were compelled to halt and vehicles could not move on the streets.
Even areas like railway stations, bus stands, and a number of main roads and kutcha bazaars were submerged. It was difficult for the people to move out. Schoolchildren remained stranded at home. Retailers in the kutcha bazaar had to suffer big losses. Many airlines suspended flights while cargo handling in the Chittagong port was halted. Many streets remained inundated under knee or waist-deep water.
City-dwellers continue to make appeal to the authority to redress their sufferings, but the authorities seem to have turned a deaf ear.
The poor drainage system is solely responsible for the plight of the city people. The extra garbage in drains is another reason for water logging. Most of the drains are so narrow that water can not pass.
A master plan for drainage was taken in 1995 but it is yet to be implemented due to negligence of the appropriate authority. Implementation of the drainage master plan could reduce sufferings of residents of the port city.
