I read with much attention and interest a letter entitled 'Narrating an incident" published in the Financial Express on Tuesday. Though the writer did not give her observation while narrating the incident, it raises a few questions. What prompted the students to present expensive sarees as 'Eid gifts' to their dear ones-maybe mother or fiancée-despite the fact that they are students, not wage earners, and they have no money? Again, those at the receiving end-the mother or fiancée-never ask a question as to wherefrom their children or boyfriends get the money for buying costly gift items for them. I rather pity the youths and have a kind of sympathy for them who were hired by the owner of the store for ensuring their security and encountering muggers. It looks they have muscle power too, but they do not use it for mugging; rather offer their services as mercenaries. Had we been able to ensure proper means of living for them, possibly they would have abandoned the path of working as mercenaries.
