What will happen to accomplices of Benazir and Matiur?

July 04, 2024 00:00:00

In all countries, there are always accomplices behind thefts, both big and small. The guard helps the thief who crosses the line. Instead of warning the householder, the guard informs the thief which door will be easier to enter and steal from. The businessman who withdraws crores of taka from the bank is often assisted by the manager (or managing director) of the bank, who validates false documents. Thousands of bighas of land become vacant, and the local administration does not even notice it, likely after receiving the promise of a bribe. When investigations began, it was found that many others not only knew about the misdeeds but also knowingly supported them. Among them were family members, executives of various banks and financial institutions, and managers of the government's Securities and Exchange Commission. Some were directly involved in making fake documents and deceiving investors.

For example, Benazir Ahmed did not even have the minimum qualifications to obtain a PhD, yet he received a PhD from Dhaka University without any effort. Newspapers reported that the basic requirements for Benazir's case were relaxed. In other words, Benazir was not only allowed to participate in the PhD programme, but he also received the highest degree of the university. Whose crime is greater - the thief, or the doorkeeper who opened the door and facilitated the theft?

The government claimed it knew nothing about it until the news was published. The anti-corruption department did not conduct any investigation into the matter, so how can action be taken? A senior government minister asked an innocent question. Does this mean effective action cannot be taken against a murderer until the murder occurs? A thief cannot be deterred until the theft is caught. So why have police, intelligence, or anti-corruption departments? The bottom line is that there is no accountability anywhere.
