Will Indo-Bangla relation get new twist?

May 06, 2014 00:00:00

India is the largest democratic country in the world. Since its inception as a sovereign state, democracy has been running there smoothly. India is the largest country in this subcontinent and Bangladesh is surrounded by India from three sides. Indian economy is booming. Indian Lok Sabha election is a great concern for the neighbouring states as it will determine whether the existing relationship would strengthen or not. Indo-Bangla relationship always faces ups and downs. Both the countries are dependent on each other.

The Indian National Congress remained in power for consecutive two terms. However, its possibility of returning to power is slim due to some of its failures. So, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and allies have a high possibility of going to power. It is feared that if BJP comes to the power, Indo-Bangla relation may suffer as BJP leaders are making unwarranted and misleading comments on Bangladesh and its citizens.

However, during the tenure of Congress, Bangladesh failed to sign an agreement on sharing the water of the Teesta River though there was great friendship between the ruling parties of the two countries. However, we hope that whoever may come to power in India that would not hinder Indo-Bangla bilateral relationship.
