Worsening gas crisis

January 17, 2025 00:00:00

Gas shortage has been a long-standing problem in Dhaka, but in recent times it has grown increasingly severe. City dwellers in various areas including Mirpur, Basabo, Rampura, Khilgaon, Banshri, Farmgate, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Jatrabari, Mohakhali, and Uttara are being badly affected by the gas crisis. Consequently, they are being forced to rely on electric stoves or LPG gas, both of which have become financially prohibitive for many. In some areas, gas supply resumes late at night but lasts only a few hours, compelling residents to complete their cooking at odd hours.

The crisis extends beyond households, severely disrupting industrial production and commercial activities. Industries face substantial losses as operations are hindered by insufficient gas supply.

This worsening situation stems from several underlying causes, including outdated supply lines, low production relative to demand, and a lack of effective management. Illegal connections further exacerbate the issue, adding strain to an already overburdened system.

Addressing this crisis requires immediate and long-term measures. Efforts should focus on increasing gas production, rehabilitating aging pipelines, and eliminating illegal connections. Additionally, adopting sustainable energy solutions and promoting alternative energy sources could provide relief and ensure energy security in the future.
