Yet another fire, at Dilu Road

February 29, 2020 00:00:00

Incidents of fire recur in the city and Dhaka's people started the day on Thursday with the news of a horrifying fire at a residential building on Dilu Road. Three people -a man, a woman and a child - died in the fire at dawn and a few more were injured. As it happens, the fire might have originated from garage of the house or from electric short circuit.

Neighbours have already pointed their finger at the congested structure and lack of preparedness to fight incidents like fire. It's unfortunate that despite repeated occurrences and criticism about noncompliance with rules together with regulatory deficiencies, hardly any effective remedial measures were taken. The city dwellers are afraid if fire incidents will continue to occur once the summer arrives. Awareness has become a cliche but still essential for improving the situation. The government needs to do something, too, to ensure public safety.
