BGMEA-CDA jt inspection of Ctg RMG units starts

Our Correspondent CHITTAGONG, May 17: Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) started conducting joint inspection in all factories in the region from today (Friday) to detect durability, risks and other faults in the factory buildings. The team comprising engineers of the CDA and directors of BGMEA Chittagong region will complete inspection within June 16 and submit its report with recommendations for taking necessary measures to remove the risk factors, a statement said. The decision of joint inspection was taken at a meeting called by directors of BGMEA at the CDA conference hall Wednesday afternoon. CDA Chairman Abdus Salam chaired the meeting while a number of garment owners including directors of the region led by BGMEA First Vice President Nasiruddin Ahmed Chowdhury attended it. The meeting had threadbare discussions relating to the reasons behind collapse of buildings and the security factors in view of the Rana Plaza incident of April 24 that killed over 1,100 garment workers and shop employees. Nasiruddin requested all factory owners under BGMEA in the region to extend their all-out support to members of the joint team during on-the-spot inspection and provide necessary information. BGMEA directors Abdul Wahab, Syed Nazrul Islam, Sheikh Sadee, Sabbir Mostafa, Anjan Shekhar Das, MDM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, BKMEA (Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association) former first vice president Shahabuddin Ahmed, BGMEA former first vice president Nasir Uddin Chowdhury and engineers of CDA were present in the meeting.
