CPA eyes handling 3.5m TEUs container by 2020

CHITTAGONG, October 25: Chittagong Port has started implementing massive development schemes with an eye to attain capacity of handling 3.5 million container boxes by the year 2020.
The port authority recently procured a sizable number of container handling equipments and more are in the pipeline to reach the port in December and January next.
CPA chairman commodore Anwarul Islam said this at a seminar on port and shipping organized by the Nautical Institute, Chittagong Branch at a hotel in the city this evening.
Chairman of the NI Chittagong Branch and Principal Officer of Mercantile Marine Department Captain Habibur Rahman presented keynote paper at the technical seminar organized on the occasion of celebrating 40 years of Nautical Institute Chittagong branch.
It was addressed, among others, by president of the Nautical Institute Captain James Robinson, Chairman of Nautical Institute Bangladesh Zillur Rahman Bhuiyan, Honourary Secretary of the NI Bangladesh Captain MA Malek and Captain Anam Chowdhury.
Port Chairman said the backyard development of New Mooring Container Terminal is likely to be completed by May 2012 and the process to construct Karnafuli Container Terminal is on.
The port has planned to construct five more jetties for handling bulk cargo at Laldiar Char area at Patenga, he said.
In his keynote paper Captain Habib said that the construction of the proposed deep sea port will be more feasible at Kutubdia instead of the government proposed site at Sonadia, according to the study conducted by the Nautical Institute.
