Ateam  from University of Dhaka, representing Bangladesh, became the first runner-up at International Convention on Students' Quality Control Circles held in Lucknow, India from 2nd to 5th December, 2015.  The convention strongly underlined the need to empower the students so that they can develop analytical skills and exhibit great team work. The concept of Students’ Quality Circles (SQCs) is derived from Quality Control Circles (QCCs).

Quality Control Circles is a participatory management technique developed by Professor Kauru Ishikawa. Quality circles have an autonomous character, are usually small, and are led by a supervisor or a senior worker. In business domain, employees/workers who participate in quality circles usually receive training on formal problem-solving methods such as brain-storming, pareto analysis, and cause-and-effect diagrams and are then encouraged to apply these methods either to specific or general company problems. A Students’ Quality Circle (SQC) is a group of three to seven students who meet at regular intervals in the presence of a facilitator to use scientific methods to identify, analyse and solve the problems. This method helps business students to a great extent.

Business students in today's world are supposed to be thinking more creatively and independently, and having a knack for problem solving. In sum, by leveraging Students’ Quality Circle, colleges and universities can enhance their quality management strategy without hampering the learning and teaching process.

In this convention, Ather Yeasir Fahim, Shahjahan khondokar and Timur Ahmed from the Marketing Department of Faculty of Business Studies of University of Dhaka represented Bangladesh after becoming the national champion. The national competition was held in Dhaka University Senate Bhaban where 56 teams from different universities competed.

In ICSQCC,  there were 131 teams from all over India and 14 countries around the world including, Ireland, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, South Africa, Sri-lanka, USA (John Hopkins University), UK (Kingston University). After the rigorous competition in the initial rounds, only 10 teams were selected to present in the final round.  Among them, the champion was the team from Colonel's Central Academy, India.  The team from University of Dhaka became the first runner-up. The convention's chief guest was Mr. Mahiepala Herath, the chief minister of Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri-Lanka who handed over the crest and the medals to the winners.

The platform of this kind not only showcases the students' talent but also provides an opportunity to prove their caliber. It also enhances their confidence, analytical ability and skills in problem solving.
