Industries Minister Dilip Barua Sunday declared the country's film making sector as industry after demand from the local film distributors and producers.
Mr Barua said the official formalities in this connection will be completed soon. Branding of Bangladesh is possible through the film industry, he said.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at 'mahurat' of film 'Nisshartho Bhalobasha' at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in the city.
Information Secretary Hedaetullah Al Mamun was present as the special guest while BFDC Managing Director M Hamid presided over the ceremony, said a press release.
The country's film distributors said the Bangladeshi cinema is losing its acceptance by audience due to use of traditional technology.
Earlier they urged the government to recognise it as industry and to bring back the golden days of Bangladeshi cinema with necessary policy support and patronisation from the government.
Mr Dilip Barua called upon the film makers to make movies which would depict real life. He also stressed the need for foreign market expansion of Bangladeshi films. The government will provide all possible policy support in this connection, he added.
Producer Gazi Mazharul Anwar, actor Razzaque, film distributor Khorshed Alam Khosru, Abdul Latif Bachchu, MA Jalil and actress Barsha were present, among others, on the occasion.
