Freelance programming fetches $ 7m last year

Bangladesh fetched US$7.0 million last year from freelance computer programming and the volume will be several times more if the talents of the young generation are utilised properly, said Mostafa Jabbar, president of Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS). Addressing a press conference at its office premises at Sonargaon Road on Monday, he said there is a big overseas outsourcing market that can be tapped by the young people including students. The Samity announced the holding of its 3rd annual 'BCS Digital Expo 2011' in the city on March 9 aiming to create awareness on the use of latest ICT technology among the youths and to project digital lifestyle to the visitors. The five-day event titled 'Digital Bangladesh for New Generation' will be held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre and is expected to be inaugurated by agricultural minister Motia Chowdhury. Finance Minister AMA Muhit and adviser to the Prime Minister HT Imam are expected to attend as chief guest and special guest respectively on the concluding programme on March 13. Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) in association with ICT ministry and ICT promotion council of commerce ministry will organize the show where around 66 local and foreign ICT service providers will showcase their products at 73 stalls of 29 pavilions at the fair. The fair will remain open for all from 10:00am to 8:00pm with an entry fee of Tk 20 per person except for the first day which will be opened from 5:00pm till 9:00pm. School children with ID cards are exempted from the fee. There will be seminars, presentation of three best projects of a virtual project competition on 'Roadmap towards Digital Bangladesh' at university level, and art competition for children. Qubee, a broadband internet service provider, is participating in the fair as the platinum sponsor while Asus, Samsung and Bangladeshi Software Company Bangladesh Digital Directories are gold sponsors. Vice-president of BCS Kazi Ashraful Alam, secretary general Mojibur Rahman Swapan and director Yusuf Ali Shamim were present in the press conference.
