KATHMANDU, Jan 19 (ANN): Students aligned to the ruling Unified Communist Party of Nepal (UCPN-Maoist) and opposition parties-Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist)-took to the streets in protest against the government decision to hike fuel prices.
UML student wing-All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU)-flowed out into the streets and staged demonstration right after the government announced its decision to hike the fuel price. UML Chairman Madhav Dhungel has warned of intensifying the protests if the government do not revoke its decision.
Likewise, Maoist-aligned All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) has announced to launch stern protests if the decision to hike fuel price was not rolled back immediately.
"We urge the government to immediately take back the decision to hike the prices of petroleum products," said ANNISU-R Chairman Himal Sharma, in a statement today. "Otherwise, the government would have to deal with stern street protests."
The revolutionary students have warned the government and Nepal Oil Corporation to stay prepared to take responsibility for the possible consequences in the aftermath of agitation. They concluded that the government move to hike the price has laid more burden upon the people instead of providing relief in the prices of gas and petroleum products.
Nepali Congress aligned Nepal Students Union vice chairman Nain Singh Mahar informed that they have informed the students in all 75 districts to resort to strike against the price hike from Thursday to protest the price hike.
"Why the government that did not hesitate to form a jumbo Cabinet and to distribute money to its cadres is being miser in providing subsidy to the people?" he questioned. "It shows the government's lack of accountability towards people."
