The National Conference on Promotion of Apprenticeships in Bangladesh will be held in Dhaka today (Wednesday) in the city. The conference will provide participants with an overview of Bangladesh's current apprenticeship system, provide an update of the current Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Reform Project, promote apprenticeships and discuss global apprenticeship systems, the International Labour Organization (ILO). Labour, Employment and Expatriate's Welfare and Overseas Welfare Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain will attend the conference as the Chief Guest, jointly organised by the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training and the ILO. Professor Abul Kashem, Chairman, Bangladesh Technical Education Board, Director-General Directorate of Technical Education and National Project Director of the TVET Reform Project and Khurshed Alam Chowdhury, Director General of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training will be present as special guests. Urs Herren, ambassador of the Embassy of Switzerland and William Hanna, ambassador and head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, will also be present. Apprenticeships are known in many countries as an effective way for young people to move from school to the world of work by acquiring skills through work experience along with off-the-job training. Through the cooperation of a number of government ministries, Bangladesh's apprenticeship system is currently being strengthened and expanded to allow more employers, master craftspersons and learners to benefit from it. The government, with industry, is developing and implementing appropriate mechanisms and incentives, including financial measures, to encourage and increase the uptake of apprenticeships in industry. - Statement
