Price of packet milk of Milk Vita has been raised by 8 to 12 per cent. One litre Milk Vita packet is selling at Tk 52. The authorities concerned said that they had to refix the price due to increase in production cost.
"We maintained the same price for last one year. But price hike of raw materials and production components -- gas, electricity, packaging materials - compelled us to take the decision," Chairman of Milk Vita Hasib Khan Toran told to FE Saturday.
Milk Vita supplies 250,000 litre of milk every day in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Noakhalli and Srimangal, said Mr Toran .
He said the price of per litre milk has been increased by Tk 4 in July this year and the rate of purchasing the same from the farmers was increased to Tk 34 from Tk 30.
Demand for dairy products usually increase by 20 per cent during the holy Ramadan as some devotees consume milk during sehri and iftar.
They said Milk Vita and other private milk-producing companies will boost their production ahead of Ramadan to meet the extra demand.
Milk Vita will increase its production to 300 thousand litres from existing 250,000 litres to meet the demand during the Ramadan.
The total demand for liquid milk during Ramadan doubles in urban areas of the country. "So, we'll meet the increased demand during the holy month by arranging double shifts for our staff," he said.
A large number of consumers like -- Milk Vita, the products of Bangladesh Milk Producer Cooperative Union Limited (Bangladesh Dhugdha Utpadonkari Samabay Union Limited).
It occupies 70 per cent of total milk market of the country. The other leading private milk-producing companies -- Aarong, Aftab, Akiz, Amo, Bikrampur, Pran and Rangpur Dairy -- meet the remaining 30 per cent demand, claimed the Milk Vita official.
