FE Report
Realtors and home exhibitors Friday spent a busy day at the REHAB summer fair 2011 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city while home-seekers walked around to find best places out to buy. The Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB)-organised four-day fair began Thursday. The monsoon rain, a High Court (HC) rule for obstructing illegal housing projects from taking part at the fair and news report in different media on the rule could not deter the home-seekers, said the organisers. A total of 268 companies have set up stalls at the fair showcasing their offers to customers for selling apartments and plots at discount rates. Though, a large number of people visited the fair the HC rule shed the fair some extent downbeat as buyers asked about the rule in the stalls and wanted to know who are in the black list and have no approval from Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK). The HC Thursday directed Rajuk to make sure that illegal housing projects cannot take part in the ongoing Rehab fair or display their ads. RAJUK chairman Engineer Nurul Huda was not available for comments as FE tried to reach him over phone. REHAB president Nasrul Hamid Bipu told the FE, "It is not our cup of tea as we are not regulatory body. RAJUK, the regulatory body, will decide if there is any illegal housing project." He said, "We sent letter to our members before starting the fair asking them not to showcase any illegal project at the fair. So, there is no unauthorised project as far as I know." Realtors are offering apartments per square feet ranging from Tk 3,000 to 40,000 depending on locations and quality mostly in the city and plots ranging from Tk 0.8 to 4.0 million per katha in and around the capital. There are some companies who are offering plots and apartments out of the capital, mainly in Cox's Bazar and Kuakata. Most of the buyers did not make any booking at the fair. They searched for the suitable one with a view to buy it later after visiting the company office. Md Humayun Kabir, a paper businessman of city's Naya Bazar told FE that he would buy an apartment and his budget is around Tk 8.0 million. "I chose three offers that fit for me and I will buy it later after on-the spot project inspection," he added. Concord Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh sales and marketing deputy manager Musa Karim said that they were offering a 10 per cent discount on apartment-booking at the fair. According to him, at present their apartments in Uttara cost Tk 6,000-9,500 per square feet, in Lake City Tk 5,000-5,500, in Dhanmondi Tk 18,000-20,000, in Gulshan Tk 22,000-38,000, and in Banani Tk 16,000-20,000 per square feet.
